Things to consider when looking for providers
We believe everyone should be able to easily find supports that are right for their life.
Here’s a list of things you may want to consider when choosing a provider:
- Whether the provider needs to be NDIS registered or not (how you manage your funding will determine this)
- Availability on certain days or times
- How long you want to travel to sessions, or if you want home visits
- A provider who specialises in your disability
- Someone who speaks your first language
- Someone who has the same interests as you
- Any specific skills you want to build
- Preferences around gender or age to make you feel most comfortable
- Anything else that you think will make a difference to your support
Tip: You can include any of these things in your request to us, and we’ll find you providers in Swan who match!

Frequently asked questions
An NDIS provider can be any Australian business who offers support to NDIS participants. Common examples of providers include support workers and allied health therapists like physiotherapists or speech pathologists. NDIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme.
No. NDIS providers do not need to be registered in order for you to work with them. There are, however, two exceptions to this rule.
First, if your funding is managed by the NDIA (it will say so on your plan) then you have to use registered providers.
Second, if the provider offers more complex support with stricter rules then they’ll need to be registered. An example of this type of support is a behaviour support practitioner.
Your NDIS plan tells you what kind of support you can get.
First, you will need to look at what support budgets you have. These are Core Supports, Capacity Building Supports and Capital Supports. (You might not have all three.)
Then, you’ll need to look at your support categories within those budgets. An example of a support category is ‘Improved Daily Living’.
The combination of these two things will let you know what types of providers you can use your funding with.
This can sometimes be really confusing - so the team at HeyHubble can help you read your plan and figure this out.
Core Supports are any supports designed to help with your everyday life. This can include things like getting around, daily life admin like cleaning the house or going out. An example of a provider who would be funded using your Core Supports budget is a a support worker.
Capacity Building Supports are supports designed to help you increase your abilities and build independence. Examples of provider who would be funded using your Capacity Building Supports include allied health therapists, like occupational therapists or speech pathologists.
Capital Supports is funding you get for high-cost assistive technology or things like Specialist Disability Accommodation. Examples of high-cost assistive technology include custom wheelchairs and prosthetics.
For most services, you do not need a referral, however there are some services that do require a referral. Use our Request a Service form or contact our friendly team today who can help you out.
The funding in your NDIS plan won’t cover things unrelated to your disability or the goals written in your plan.
You also won’t be able to pay for things that you can get from another government system (like the Health or Education system). A common example of something you can’t purchase with your NDIS plan is medication.
You might come across the term ‘reasonable and necessary’ when figuring out what the NDIS will or won’t cover.
‘Reasonable and necessary’ is a set of criteria the NDIS has created to determine what can be funded or not. Here’s a simplified version that you can refer to:
If you can answer YES to each of these 6 questions, the NDIS is likely to fund your request.
- Is this a product or service you need due to a disability?
- Does it help you meet your goals?
- Is it reasonable value for money?
- Is there evidence that this product or service is effective?
- Is this something that you wouldn’t be able to receive from your family or the community?
- Is the NDIS the most suitable funding scheme to pay for this support?
Your local area coordinator, early childhood partner or NDIA planner can help you understand your plan. Their details should be written at the front of your plan.
If you have a support coordinator, they can also help you.
Alternatively, reach out to us at HeyHubble. We can organise a phone call with you to go through your plan and answer any of your questions.
Nope! HeyHubble is 100% free for NDIS participants, their families, carers, nominees and even their support coordinators. Any help we give you, like calling you to help you understand your plan, is also completely free. It does not come out of your plan (or pocket) at all.
