We'll connect you with providers who can do functional capacity assessments
A functional capacity assessment will provide recommendations for NDIS supports across all areas of your life. Assessments are usually done by an occupational therapist (OT), however they can also be done by other allied health professionals. HeyHubble can find you quality OTs and allied health providers who can do the assessment for you.
Covered by the NDIS
You can use your NDIS plan to pay for a functional capacity assessment. The funding you can use for this will be under the 'Improved Daily Living' support category, which you can find in your Capacity Building Supports budget.
What is a functional capacity assessment (FCA)?
A functional capacity assessment will look at your needs and goals across your home, work, community and school settings in order to recommend supports for you. The purpose of the assessment is to give you a detailed FCA report at the end. You can use the report to help you figure out how to use your NDIS funding, or share it with others to help communicate your needs.
You might find an FCA particularly helpful if:
- You're new to the NDIS and don't know what supports and services would suit you best.
- You have a plan reassessment coming up, and you need some evidence of how your current supports have worked out for you.
- You're entering into a new stage of your life soon (like getting a job or moving out of home) and want to plan ahead for any new supports.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, you can still access NDIS support without a functional capacity assessment. The exception to this may be certain big-ticket items like high-cost assistive technology or home modifications. For these things, the NDIA requires evidence on why you need them and the benefits you'll gain from having them. An FCA can form part of this evidence.
No, an FCA is not required for your NDIS application. You may need to gather other bits of evidence that show the impact of your disability, but an FCA does not need to be one of them.
The purpose of a functional capacity assessment is for information. While it’s called a functional capacity “assessment”, the aim isn’t to evaluate a person's functional performance as ‘good’ or ‘bad’.
Rather, it’s an unbiased snapshot of your needs and detailed information about what supports you'd benefit from.
You can use it to inform how you use your NDIS funding, to help tell other people in your life about your support needs, or to prepare for your plan reassessment meeting.
An FCA is often completed over at least two sessions - sometimes more. There are three parts:
- An interview with you and/or your carer.
- An environmental assessment, which involves your therapist or social worker seeing how you do things in different situations - like at work, home, school or out and about.
- A report that details the level of support you need in different areas, plus recommendations for what that support could look like.
Occupational therapists mainly conduct the assessments, however other allied health professionals like physiotherapists and social workers can also complete them.
You should ask for a cost estimate from your occupational therapy or other allied health provider for your specific situation. However, as a guide, you can expect an FCA to cost around $2,000 in average cases.
The cost will include the time spent face-to-face with your OT (or other professional), the time it takes to research and write the report, plus any travel costs.
You can find quality, trusted occupational therapists on HeyHubble. We can also connect you with occupational therapists who can do functional capacity assessments.

Alternatively you can ask your local area coordinator, early childhood partner, NDIA planner or support coordinator to help you.
Yes, functional capacity assessments can be completed over telehealth. The interview component will be the same, but the environmental assessment may require some creativity. You may have to walk your therapist around your home via video call, perform some tasks or a range of motion on camera, or provide some photos of your home layout.
A functional capacity assessment can take up to 10 hours to complete, including report writing. However this may vary depending on several factors and in complex cases, it can take longer.
