Frequently asked questions
Positive behaviour support involves positive reinforcement and proactive strategies that develop positive behaviours and reduce or eliminate unsafe behaviours. This is implemented using through a behaviour support plan which will be created by a behaviour support practitioner.
Yes, the NDIS can cover behaviour support. It’s an allied health service that’s funded under the ‘Capacity Building’ - ‘Improved Relationships’ section of your plan. This type of support needs to be approved and specifically added to your NDIS plan.
Not everyone with NDIS funding can access this support. Generally, you will be able to use your plan to cover allied health supports, but it’s important to check that the service you want relates to your NDIS plan and is considered ‘reasonable and necessary’. Behaviour support must be written into your NDIS plan to be able to access these services.
If you can answer YES to each of these 6 questions, the NDIS is likely to fund your request.
- Is this a product or service you need due to your disability?
- Does it help you meet your goals?
- Is it reasonable value for money?
- Is there evidence that this product or service is effective?
- Is this something that you wouldn’t be able to receive from your family or the community?
- Is the NDIS the most suitable funding scheme to pay for this support?
You will need to inform the planner or local area coordinator (LAC) at your plan reassessment meeting that you want to work on your behavioural support needs and have a goal directly related to relationships and behaviour. You can let them know that you specifically want to see a behaviour support practitioner.
Restrictive practices are regulated and evidence-based techniques that are only used as a last resort, specifically to keep a person, or those around them, safe. Under the NDIS, there are 5 different categories of restrictive practice. These are:
- Seclusion - a person is given space to self-regulate in an area where they cannot leave.
- Chemical restraint - a person is given medication to prevent unsafe behaviour.
- Mechanical restraint - equipment or clothing is used to help prevent unsafe movements.
- Physical restraint - preventing unsafe movements by phyiscally holding someone.
- Environmental restraint - access to certain areas or spaces is prevented to avoid unsafe situations.
