Psychologists funded by the NDIS can support people with an acquired brain injury by:
- Developing strategies to support you with other mental health diagnoses like anxiety, bipolar disorder and depression following traumatic brain injury
- Supporting you to develop social strategies to enjoy a healthy social life and close relationships
- Increasing your independence in day-to-day activities
- Providing written recommendations that can help justify disability-related items you want to buy with your NDIS funding
- Helping you to improve your mental health and wellbeing
- Improving areas of your life related to self-esteem, purpose and belonging
- Exploring necessary tools to assist with your behavioural support needs

Frequently asked questions
If you have a disability, a psychologist’s role in your support network will depend on your own unique circumstances. Since the NDIS is a goal based scheme, any goals you have about your mental or emotional health could be assisted by working with a psychologist.
Funding to see a psychologist can be found in your NDIS plan under the ‘Improved Daily Living’ category.
Funding for allied health generally comes from your ‘Capacity Building’ budget, under the category ‘Improved Daily Living’ within your plan. If you have funds allocated to this category as part of your NDIS plan, you can access Psychology.
You can pay for psychology from your NDIS plan in many cases. The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports to help people living with disability. What is considered reasonable and necessary will vary according to each person’s needs.
A psychologist can charge up to $234.83 per hour in Perth metro areas as part of the NDIS Pricing Arrangements. These arrangements govern the maximum price a provider can charge NDIS participants for their services.
They only apply to funding that is agency-managed or plan-managed. If you self-manage your funding, these price limits don't apply to you.
Participants in other states, regional and remote areas may have different price limits. Refer to the most recent NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits to check what price limit applies to you.
Not everyone with NDIS funding can access this support. Generally, you will be able to use your plan to cover allied health supports, but it’s important to check that the service you want relates to your NDIS plan and is considered ‘reasonable and necessary’.
If you can answer YES to each of these 6 questions, the NDIS is likely to fund your request.
- Is this a product or service you need due to a disability?
- Does it help you meet your goals?
- Is it reasonable value for money?
- Is there evidence that this product or service is effective?
- Is this something that you wouldn’t be able to receive from your family or the community?
- Is the NDIS the most suitable funding scheme to pay for this support?
The NDIS covers psychology for autistic people in many cases. The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports to help people living with disability, and this includes autism spectrum disorder. What is considered reasonable and necessary will vary according to each person’s needs.
If you are autistic or have another disability, you may be eligible for the NDIS.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to assist people whose disability significantly impacts their life (or is likely to significantly impact their life in the future, without early intervention).
You can use the NDIS’ Am I Eligible tool to check your eligibility.
Yes, the NDIS provides support to help with the day-to-day impact caused by somebody’s disability.
No. Psychiatry is considered a medical practice and is appropriately funded by the medical system.
